On 30 October 2019, the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center (ARMAC) participated in a multi-stakeholder workshop in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar on establishing a National Mine Action Authority in the country.
Organized by Switzerland, New Zealand and the Danish Refugee Council/Danish Demining Group in collaboration with the Department of Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, the workshop provided a chance for mine action stakeholders to discuss the best possible approaches and strategies for establishing a national mine action authority.
In addition to ARMAC, the workshop was also attended by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining and national ministry representatives from the Social Welfare, Defence, Police and General Administration departments who provided guidance on policies, legal frameworks and strategies that could support a mine action sector in the country.
ARMAC was grateful for the opportunity to attend the workshop and in its role as a regional mine action center for ASEAN it stands ready to assist the Government of Myanmar on this important initiative.
