ARMAC Joints Collaboration with GICHD to Conduct Study on Gender Equality and Empowerment in Mine Action

Phnom Penh, 21 October 2021 —The ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center (ARMAC) is pleased to announce its joint collaboration with the Geneva International Center for Human Demining (GICHD) to conduct a study/research on gender equality and empowerment in mine action in the ASEAN region, more specifically a study on the mine action sector’s approach towards the monitoring and reporting of the gendered impact of land release conducted in the region with country case studies. The project will examine the overarching question of how can mine action stakeholders (donors, national authorities, and stakeholders) better understand and communicate the impact of clearance activities on gender equality and inclusion in the results chain and reporting. The outcome of the project is a joint GICHD-ARMAC paper which will be presented in a regional forum on September 2022. The study is one of the deliverables for the project, Strengthen Gender Equality and Empowerment in Mine Action in the Mine/Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) affected ASEAN Member States which is financed by the Government of Italy.

Inaugural Launch of the Friends of ARMAC (FoA) Network

Phnom Penh, 23 September 2021 — ARMAC is honored to have the honorable presence of H.E. Mr. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia at the hybrid event for the inaugural launch of the Friends of the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center (ARMAC) or FoA hosted by the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.

The FoA is an initiative proposed by former Ambassador of Viet Nam to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and 2020 Chairman of ARMAC Steering Committee Mr. Vu Quang Minh. His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn together with 2020-2021 ARMAC Steering Committee Members supported the initiative.

Over 100 participants both in person and online from the governments, bilateral donors, international and national non-government organizations, and other stakeholders from across the region attended the successful launch of the event.

ARMAC Executive Director (ED) advised everyone that the funds will go a long way to help sustain ARMAC’s operations and finance activities in the pipeline. ARMAC ED also delivered a short presentation highlighting the work of ARMAC, and potential future collaborations with Vietnamese entities. ARMAC ED also expressed his gratitude to Viet Nam’s continuous support to ARMAC including the joint organizing of the Friends of ARMAC inaugural launch in September.

ARMAC received financial support from Viet Nam

31 August 2021 – ARMAC received financial support from the Embassy of Viet Nam in Cambodia, MB Bank Plc., and M.G.N. Emperor Bank during an in-person meeting between ARMAC staff and Vietnamese representatives on 31 August 2021.

ARMAC Executive Director (ED) advised everyone that the funds will go a long way to help sustain ARMAC’s operations and finance activities in the pipeline. Signing an Agreement between CMAA and ARMAC on Co-Implementation of the Project “Enhance Victim Assistance Programme in the ASEAN Member States”

19 August 2021 – ARMAC signed an agreement on Co-Implementation of the project “Enhance Victim Assistance Programme in the ASEAN Member States” with Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA).

Executive Director of ARMAC, Mr. Prum Suonpraseth and Secretary General of CMAA, H.E. Mr. Prum Sophakmonkol signed on the agreement.

The new partnership between ARMAC and CMAA is established to ensure that the two parties have a mutual understanding and clear directions to implement the project.  This will mark another milestone in promoting and addressing victim assistance work in Cambodia and other landmine/explosive remnants of war (ERW) affected ASEAN Member States.

ARMAC Team Pays Courtesy Call to Ambassador of Lao PDR

14 July 2021 – ARMAC team led by its Executive Director Prum Suonpraseth paid a courtesy call on Lao PDR Ambassador H.E. Mr. Amphay Kindavong at His Excellency’s Office in Phnom Penh.

ARMAC ED provided an update to Ambassador H.E. Mr. Amphay Kindavong, regarding latest projects and initiatives by the Center including the planned arrangement for the upcoming Friends of ARMAC Event which is targeted in Quarter 4 of 2021.

Their discussions also touched on ARMAC’s catalytic role as coordinator for the region; and how ARMAC can remain sustainable in the long run. ARMAC ED thanked the Ambassador for the Government’s continued support and financial contribution to ARMAC.

ARMAC, Government of Indonesia calls for coherent mine action support through mainstreaming SDGs

Phnom Penh 07 July 2021 – Representatives and senior officials of national mine action authorities, donor agencies and parties ended the one-day workshop on Achieving Sustainable and Inclusive Development in Landmine/Explosive Remnant of War (ERW)-Affected Countries with a promise to synergize efforts in mine action and a plan to develop a set of recommendations and strategy that links Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets in their national and regional level priorities.

The workshop was organized by the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center (ARMAC) and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Phnom Penh on 1 July in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The workshop was among a series of regional events planned this year by ARMAC to promote dialogue and strengthen cooperation in the mine action sector at the regional level. The workshop brought together stakeholders from ASEAN landmine/ERW affected countries and non-affected states, partners and stakeholders in the region.

In his opening statement, H.E. Mr. Sudirman Haseng  Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of Cambodia highlighted Indonesia’s commitment and active engagement with humanitarian mining activities in the region. He also stressed that, “Indonesia’s commitment mainly is channeled through ARMAC and the ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting – Plus Working Group on Humanitarian Mine Action. Ambassador Haseng said that “this workshop is to fulfil Indonesia’s commitment to support ARMAC, in particular its work relating to enhancing awareness programme on the dangers of mine / ERWs.”

Director General of ASEAN Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia H.E. Mr. Sidharto R. Suryodipuro emphasized the three key points relevant to the workshop: the importance of a comprehensive and holistic approach to address the threat of landmines and ERW should not be limited to security and humanitarian aspect. It also must take into account the development aspect, hence the achievement of SDGs; presence of strong national capacities that includes creating effective safeguards over explosives and materials, landmine clearance operations, and victims’ rehabilitation, while taking into account the rights of people affected by these weapons; and continuous international collaboration such as the ASEAN cooperation mechanism where partners and donor countries extend support including through the provision of technical, financial, and other relevant assistances.
